Primary Drills for Runners
This resources provides runners and practitioners with a list of the primary drills we prioritize in working with runners across the injury to performance spectrum. All of the exercises also provide the reader with hyperlinks that provide video demonstrations to foster proper form and technique. The drills are broken down into the following categories: 1) Run-centric drills, 2) Fundamental human movements, & 3) Energy storage and release drills (AKA plyometrics).
Physical Performance Tests & Clearance Considerations for Runners
"When can I run?" This is perhaps the most common question that runners have and pose to clinicians they seek in consultation. Given the predictable performance demands of running, runners can be taken through a simple battery of tests/assessments to determine if they can confidently load through key regions and tissues associated with running. A test sheet is also provided that highlights opportunities for improvement.
The Modified Wilk Classification System
A critical first step in working with runners sidelined by pain and/or injury is to stage and type their presentation while knowing how to proceed in the context of pain. This document will help readers stage and type a running-related injury to foster improved decision making in getting someone back to consistent and healthy training.
Running is a hierarchical skill relative to most activities of daily living. It is therefore important to conduct a running analysis at some point in working with runners, especially if they are sidelined from training secondary to pain and/or pathology. This guide is designed to provide clinicians and health professionals with a simple and practical framework to approach conducting a TM running analysis while learning how to interpret and apply the results in real time. By enhancing one’s understanding of running and gait retraining, loads can be shifted away from sensitized or pathologic tissue while demonstrating to patients that their running related pain is malleable, and can be lessened by manipulating specific aspects of their gait. Having runners experience a rapid improvement in their symptoms through simple gait retraining has the potential to enhance a runner’s expectations and confidence with treatment, which ultimately lends to a better outcome.
If there is one thing that runners should do outside of running, it's strength train. This guide lays out the primary exercises and drills that we routinely prescribe to runners across the injury to performance spectrum. Regardless of whether you are rebounding from an injury, dealing with niggles that constantly interfere with your training, or looking to reach a performance milestone, the information in this guide will be of interest to you. With over 75 high definition videos coupled with 15 chapters and three sample programs, this is a must have.Wishing you HAPPY, HEALTHY, & STRONG training!
